What is Virechan?

Virechan is the second Panchakarma therapy โ€” a physician-administered programme of therapeutic purgation that expels accumulated Pitta and associated toxins from the small intestine, liver, gallbladder, and blood. It is the treatment of choice for Pitta-dominant conditions and is often the first Karma used in infertility treatment because of its powerful effect on hormonal and hepatic function.

Virechan is performed using specific purgative medicines โ€” ranging from mild (Triphala, Isabgol) to potent (Trivrit, Senna, Castor oil) depending on the patient's constitution, condition, and strength. The procedure is tailored precisely to each patient.

Conditions Treated by Virechan

  • Liver disorders โ€” fatty liver, hepatitis, elevated enzymes
  • Skin diseases โ€” psoriasis, eczema, acne, urticaria, vitiligo
  • Hormonal imbalances โ€” PCOD, irregular periods, PMS
  • Infertility and reproductive disorders
  • Hyperacidity, peptic ulcer, gastritis
  • Inflammatory conditions โ€” rheumatoid arthritis, gout
  • Hypertension and cardiovascular disorders (Pitta type)
  • Migraine and chronic headaches
  • Jaundice and biliary disorders
  • Mental disorders โ€” anger, irritability, mood disorders

Virechan in Infertility Treatment

Virechan is particularly important in infertility cases because elevated Pitta โ€” often manifesting as inflammation, high estrogen, liver congestion, or autoimmune tendencies โ€” directly interferes with implantation and pregnancy maintenance. Clearing this Pitta through Virechan often results in dramatic hormonal improvements, improved follicular development, and better endometrial quality.
