Understanding Osteoarthritis in Ayurveda
Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is described in Ayurveda as Sandhivata โ a condition of aggravated Vata dosha in the joints (Sandhi). As Vata increases, it depletes the Shleshaka Kapha (synovial fluid) that lubricates and cushions the joints, leading to the characteristic pain, stiffness, cracking sounds, and progressive degeneration of cartilage.
This Ayurvedic understanding is entirely consistent with modern pathology โ and it points directly to the treatment: reduce Vata, restore lubrication, clear inflammation (Pitta involvement), and rebuild the joint tissue.
Our Ayurvedic Treatment Protocol
Snehana (Oleation Therapy)
Internal and external administration of medicated ghee and oils softens and nourishes the joint tissue. Mahanarayan oil and Dhanvantaram oil are commonly used for external Abhyanga (massage).
Janu Basti / Greeva Basti
Warm medicated oil is retained in a dough dam formed around the knee (Janu Basti) or neck (Greeva Basti). This deeply nourishes, lubricates, and reduces inflammation in the targeted joint.
Svedana (Therapeutic Sweating)
Elakizhi (Patra Pinda Sweda) โ massage with pouches of medicinal leaves โ reduces stiffness and improves blood circulation in the affected joints.
Basti (Medicated Enema)
The primary treatment for Vata disorders. A course of Anuvasana and Niruha Basti addresses the root imbalance affecting the joints and rebuilds joint tissue from within.
Herbal Medicines
Classical formulations such as Yogaraja Guggulu, Maharasnadi Kwath, Simhanada Guggulu, and Ashwagandha are prescribed to reduce inflammation, pain, and cartilage degeneration.
Results You Can Expect
- Significant reduction in joint pain and stiffness within 2โ4 weeks
- Improved range of motion and mobility
- Reduced requirement for pain medications (NSAIDs)
- Slowing or halt of further cartilage degeneration
- Improved quality of life and ability to perform daily activities
- Many patients successfully avoid knee replacement surgery
Conditions We Treat
Beyond knee osteoarthritis, our protocols are effective for hip osteoarthritis, cervical spondylitis, lumbar spondylosis, shoulder arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and ankylosing spondylitis. Each condition receives a tailored protocol.
Lifestyle & Diet Guidance
Ayurvedic management of osteoarthritis extends beyond in-clinic procedures. We provide detailed guidance on anti-inflammatory foods (warm, easily digestible, rich in omega-3s and antioxidants), appropriate exercise and yoga (particularly poses that strengthen muscles around affected joints without stressing them), weight management, and daily routines that reduce Vata aggravation.
